Childs Play
Sometimes being a big brother is even better than being a superhero… Of course being a superhero would be fantastic, but as if he needed a cape anyway. He was tall and not nearly as well-built as superman. In all honesty a cape would make him look ridiculous, like a monkey in a turtle neck or Kitty on prom night, and that was disastrous. No, being a big brother suited him just fine because he liked the stigma attached as well as the responsibility that came with it. That and the fact the ‘youngest child’ label was wearing tirelessly thin, and just the idea of taking care of someone appealed to him. It always had, which is why he became a medic.
Trapped deep in his thoughts he barley heard the doorbell sound, but as the familiar noise traveled through the Walker household the well known feelings in his stomach began to rise. Excitedly Justin sprung from his bed, the anticipation exhilarated him making his strides faster and he reached the staircase in less than a heart beat.
From the top landing he saw them, both wrapped up in their scarves and winter coats, standing with their mother and Rebecca a few meters from the front door. A smile slowly appeared on his lips as he waited to see whether either of them would notice. It doesn’t take him long to receive an answer.
“Uncle Justin,” Paige called as soon as his tall figure caught her eye. Hurriedly she threw off her jacket and ran towards him, eyes wide and a smile equal to his plastered on her face. He automatically strode down the stairs two at a time to meet her.
“Hey,” he said, bending down to wrap his arms around her small frame, “didn’t think I’d be seeing you for a while.”
“How come?” asked Paige letting go.
The curiousness in her eyes made Justin smile more, but he didn’t answer. Instead he stood up and took a step towards his older sister. “Ready for your road trip?” he questioned earnestly smirking a little as he said so. Sarah grinned back sensing the sarcasm in his voice, and instead answered his question with one of her own.
“Looking forward to not going on the road trip?”
He smiled again with fake happiness and was about to rebut when his mothers entrance smothered the delivery, “Okay I’m ready to go,” she said, laying her luggage on the ground beside her.
All three siblings peered at the suitcase. It was a small navy blue travel bag, decorated with a rainbow ribbon around the handle to help distinguish it. However, contrary to what Justin thought should be packed in a overnight travel bag – which was toiletries and a set of clothes. Nora seemed to have squashed the whole house in there, to the point of making it nearly burst at the seams.
Silently they waited, only Paige and Cooper were audible. It was clear to him that someone would say something, but he wasn’t going to be the one that opened his mouth. Luckily he was saved by Sarah. “Gee Mom we’re only going for a night.”
“I know,” said Nora lifting her luggage, “I want to be prepared for anything.”
Sarah stared back at her perplexed, “anything like what?”
“I don’t know,” reasoned Nora, stepping towards her grandchildren, “just anything.” Quickly she pecked Paige and Cooper on the cheek, regarding them for a moment “I promise we’ll make those cookies when I get back.” she finally said looking them both in the eye.
“Ohh cookies.” piped Justin
“Yes,” confirmed Nora, “Choc Chip ones”
Justin smiled widely and nudged Rebecca. The youngest woman hadn’t opened her mouth once since Sarah, Paige and Cooper had arrived – well, what he’d heard anyway, and he’d could hypothesis that the Joe issue was a key contributor to the awkwardness.
His thoughts were interrupted once again by Sarah biding her farewells to the Whendon children “You be good okay.” she cooed hugging them both tightly before walking after Nora towards the door, “and look after them.”
“We will,” groaned Justin and Rebecca, fully expecting the anxious mother speech.
However, just before the door closed Sarah’s head appeared through the opening, “I was still talking to Paige and Cooper.” She said with a devilish grin painted to her face, closing the door behind her.

Chaos, utter chaos is how the Walker household could be described. Couch cushions and blankets could be seen from every comer of the room, making it look like world war three had broken out. Board game pieces, popcorn, chocolate wrappers and DVD cases were hidden under random pieces furniture - most under the coffee table where an unfinished pizza lay in its box.
Amidst of all the drama was Justin and Rebecca, both sprawled out on one of the two couches, looking extremely worn out. Around them Paige and Cooper ran about, fighting over something insignificant. At this point he really didn’t care. He had a splitting headache, the kind that you get when you’re sleeping next to a jackhammer or a chainsaw. It didn’t occur to him until now the reason he enjoyed giving his niece and nephew back after his babysitting jobs so much. Don’t get him wrong, Paige and Coop were absolute champions in his mind, but he and Rebecca had stupidly made the mistake of feeding them too much sugar, and the faster their lolly high increased the quicker the buzz he got before seeing them decreased. Babysitting had turned into an absolute nightmare.
Out of the corner of his eye he saw Rebecca sit up. The pensive look on her face made him wonder what she was going to do, but he didn’t ask. Talking seemed way too hard at the moment; sleep on the other hand looked much more appealing, so he closed his eyes and merely listened.
“Okay, time out guys,” he heard her say. It was a command but it didn’t sound stern, more tired and desperate, and Justin guessed he should probally help.
Calmly he too sat up; Cooper and Paige were still fighting. However, they’d stopped running around, which he supposed was a good thing.
“Who wants to play a game.” he heard Rebecca ask
“Not me!” he said, staring at her with discontent, “I’m all gamed out.”
Calmly she turned to stare at him. The look she sent was dismissing, her chocolate brown eyes bored into his equally colored ones allowing him to see just how tired she really was. He held her gaze for what seemed like forever, although after a moment it got too much for him so he let eyes drift away from hers to peer at the kids. They too were staring at each other, but differently. Their eyes possessed no sign of wear or drowsiness. Instead both brother and sister looked at each other with pure disgust, hatred, and spite all rolled into one. If Justin didn’t know any better he would have thought they were going to kill each other.
Fortunately though, he did know better. After countless arguments with his siblings over the years, he knew it would work itself out. In another ten minutes Paige and Cooper would be best friends again. However Rebecca didn’t seem as convinced, so he decided to humor her.
“Alright a game, that sounds fun.” his voice leaked with fake enthusiasm, although he was sure Rebecca was the only one who could sense it.
Paige and Cooper’s death stare broke instantly. Both were still wary of one another, but there argument had seized for the moment, and Justin and Rebecca savored the silence.
“What are we gonna play,” asked Cooper, itching for another way of keeping himself occupied.
“Twenty questions.” answered Rebecca, a slight smile appearing on her face
“What’s that?” asked Paige
Rebecca sat up a little straighter, preparing to answer. “It’s a game where each contestant has twenty questions,” she said, becoming more excited at the prospect of such a peaceful game by the second. “They can ask anyone in the group, and that person has to answer,” there was a slight pause. “Truthfully” she added.
“That sounds boring.” Cooper exclaimed, ever so graciously.
Justin extended his arm to ruffle him on the head, “we can play forty questions if you like, I hear that’s way more fun.”
“No!” yelled Cooper, struggling against his Uncle’s strong grip.
“Good.” said Justin taking his hand away, and repositioning himself on the couch, “I’ll go first.” He thought for awhile, enjoying their growing anticipation. Calmly he turned to face Cooper, “blue or pink?” He saw them all groan, but paid no attention.
“Blue!” screeched Cooper, as he’d just been asked the stupidest question in the world.
“Are you sure.” teased Paige “cause I saw...”
“Be quiet PAIGE.” the emphasis he put on the last word didn’t go unnoticed by anyone, and Justin once again reached out to hold him back.
“Your turn buddy.” he stated, trying to distract him.
Cooper peered around, preparing to choose his victim. His eyes stopped searching when they found his Uncle. “Spiderman or Bob the Builder?” he asked
Justin tilted his head in thought, but before he could answer Paige’s voice interjected. “That’s a stupid question,” she said glancing at her younger brother with distaste. Once again they looked like they were going to kill each other, and out of the comer of his eye he saw Rebecca lean back defeated. The one game she thought they wouldn’t end up arguing in and she’d be drastically wrong. Justin felt sorry for her.
“Spiderman,” he finally said, attempting to resurrect the game again. To prove to Paige that her brother’s question wasn’t stupid and to Rebecca that her game idea wasn’t a total flop, he said. “R… Best looking male figurine?”
Rebecca sat up interested in the game one more, “any figurine?” When Justin nodded her face frowned in thought one more. Paige and Cooper watched on in silence, and Justin wondered what could possibly be taking her so long to decide. His thoughts were interrupted when she finally answered, “Action man.” she said simply.
Justin nodded a little, letting a faint smirk fall on his lips, “Really,” he said “You know I’ve been told I look like him.” Rebecca laughed aloud, causing him to frown slightly. “What?” asked he looking puzzled, “You don’t think I’m good looking?”
“No, I didn’t say that,” She said peering at the ground as if it had an answer, “I… your just not my type.”
This time Justin chuckled a little, intrigued by her statement, “and what is your type?”
She shrugged, he didn’t know whether it was because she was uncomfortable or annoyed “I don’t know,” she stumbled for words, “I kind of thought Tommy was cute, when I didn’t know he was my brother.”
The last part was more of an after statement, however Justin’s mouth hung open in shock and disbelief none-the-less. Not to sound conceited but no girl had ever preferred his biggest brother over him in his life – except Julia, and hearing that Rebecca thought Tommy was better looking sparked a tiny bit of jealousy in him. It was no big deal, but in a way he’d just expected her to agree with him.
“Tommy!” he finally exclaimed, looking at her for answers.
“Yeah,” she smiled, enjoying the power she held over him right now “You seem shocked.”
“Yeah,” he said like it was the most obvious answer in the world. “I just…” He was speechless. It made him seem totally vein to be stressing over this, but it was important. He’d just expected her to think he was attractive. After all he thought she was hot, he’d even told Tommy and Kevin. Maybe he should disclose this to her, make her feel guilty and change her mind. That wasn’t what he wanted though. He wanted her to honestly admit that she thought he was the best looking Walker male. Was that so much to ask?
His thoughts were interrupted by a small voice beside him, “I think you’re really handsome Uncle Justin,” said Paige while nudging her brother in the ribs.
Cooper who had been off in another world snapped out of it and nodded violently, “Yep,” he agreed, but Justin knew it was a reflex answer. Much like the ones he’d given his mother at that age when he’d been too preoccupied in television to listen to a word she said.
Haughtily Justin rose, “That’s it bed time.”
Paige and Cooper groaned, “What!” his niece exclaimed.
“Bed,” repeated Justin picking Cooper up in one arm and Paige in the other, “it’s eleven o’clock, and I’m not feeding you two anymore sugar.”
Slowly with his niece and nephew in his arms he made his way upstairs, leaving Rebecca and their conversation behind him in the lounge room.
***
After putting Paige and Cooper to bed Justin ventured back downstairs. Rebecca was nowhere to be seen – probally getting ready to go sleep as well, so he walked to the kitchen. He was still semi fuming about their conversation and was experiencing a sudden craving for hot chocolate to drown his sorrows. It had been ages since he last remembered having one.
Just as he dropped the white marshmallow into the steaming cup of coco the phone rang, he knew it was going to be either Nora or Sarah ringing, most likely to check up on them and the kids. Hurriedly he jogged to source of the ringing. “Hello,” he said cheerfully into receiver, “Man who just murdered Justin and Rebecca and kidnapped your kids speaking.”
“God Justin don’t joke around.” came Sarah’s annoyed voice. He could picture her on the other end of the line sending him daggers.
An evil grin formed leisurely on his lips, preparing to have all the fun they wanted, “Are you annoyed at me, or the fact that you had to spend two hours in a car with mum.” he asked curiously.
“Both,” She informed him rather curtly, “Anyway not that I don’t love talking to you, but can I speak to Paige and Cooper.”
“Magic word.” asked Justin, enjoying every minute of his older sisters torture
There was a slight pause on the phone, and for a minute he thought she’d hung up, “Please,” said the agitated voice, and Justin nearly laughed at the effect of what he said next would do to her.
“Sorry but their asleep.”
“You’re kidding?” exclaimed Sarah “I thought that you’d all be bouncing off the walls by now.”
Justin momentarily feigned shock, but then realized it was pointless when she couldn’t see him. “I can’t believe you think I’m that irresponsible.” he whined
“I don’t” she responded, “Just tell me Paige and Cooper are aright, and give me one good reason why I shouldn’t leave mom here, and I’ll go.”
Justin thought for a moment glancing around as Rebecca walked into the kitchen, dressed in her plaid pajama pants and a small t-shirt. “Paige and Coop are fine, and…” he thought some more. “If you leave mom there, whose gonna baby-sit when I can’t.”
“I have four other siblings Justin.”
Justin shrugged, “I couldn’t think of anything else.” there was another pause, “just take deep breaths okay.”
“I’ll try,” said Sarah half heartedly “love you.”
“Love you too,” he said, “bye.”
He hung the phone back on its charger and walked back to his hot chocolate, taking a sip as soon as he reached it. Hot syrup ran down his throat, reminding him why he loved them so much. Out of the comer of his eye he noticed Rebecca lean on the bench.
“Want one,” he asked, casually putting his cup down.
“Nah I’m fine.” she said, but he could see there was something else. Call it brotherly instinct or maybe the fact that she looked pensive, either way her knew something was wrong.
“What’s up.” he asked, straightening a little more out of concern.
“Nothing,” she sighed, before several seconds rolled by causing her to break. “It’s just…” she thought a little more, looking utterly conflicted throughout the process. “Do you think we would have fought like that if we’d grown up together.”
“What like Paige and Cooper?” He questioned.
She nodded.
The deepness of the conversation shocked him a bit. He’d expected something a little more juvenile, like ‘Oops I broke a vase.” It stumped him, and he too had to think about it for a moment, trying to find a good way of answering. “Who knows,” he came up with lamely. “It doesn’t really matter; I still would have felt the same way I do now. So what if we didn’t grown up together.”
She nodded slightly and made a non-committal noise, seeming content with the answer. Unfortunately Justin wasn’t, so he went on. “You know Paige is gonna grow up pretty soon, and boys are gonna start calling her stuff… like a sweet ride” he deliberately put emphasis on the last two words, remembering their own experience. He looked at her earnestly, “and I have no doubt that Cooper’s gonna be punching them all.”
Rebecca smiled, noting the comparison, “chivalrous.” she stated
“Just like his uncle,” smirked Justin.
This made Rebecca grin even more, “and modest.” she said
Justin paused smiling cheekily, “yeah…like none of his uncles.” Slight laughter filled the room, bouncing off the walls to make it sound louder than it was. It was infectious and his heart ached at how much he cherished spending time with her.
The laughter soon subsided and the mood turned serious once again. He looked everywhere but her, not wanting to keep her awake any longer. She was tired and he was sure she wanted to go to sleep as soon as possible, but Rebecca didn’t seem content with leaving yet.
“I love you Justin.”
His eyes brows shot up in surprise. For the second time tonight she’d managed to shock him beyond belief. Not because he wasn’t used to hearing this phrase, but because it was Rebecca who was saying it. They’d only known each other for a few months, he hadn’t even thought about throwing the ‘L’ word around yet.
Bit by bit he shifted and pushed himself away from the counter. It was hard to figure out who was more shocked at the declaration, because as he drew closer he could see Rebecca’s confused face more clearly. However he didn’t stop, when he was close enough he extended his arms and pulled her into a hug. She didn’t respond at first, but after a moment he felt her skinny arms wrap around his waist.
“I love you too,” he whispered kissing her on the cheek. Gradually he released his grip and stood back.
She did the same clearing her throat. A long pause followed, and he wondered whether he should fill it. However he didn’t need to, “Wow… that was weird.” she smiled
“Tell me about it.” he nodded, “You went all mushy.”
She laughed again and he felt the awkwardness disappear, he glanced momentarily back at his hot chocolate, then back to her, “you sure you don’t want one?” he asked pointing at the cup.
“Nah, I’m just gonna go to bed.”
He nodded understandingly, “well goodnight then,” he offered
“Night.” she smiled, slowly turning around. Her long blonde curls bounced as she began walking towards the doorway, illuminated by the light in the kitchen. Justin once again peered at his hot chocolate, the marshmallow had already melted and the contents looked cold. Little by little he bent down so that his elbows were resting on the table; suddenly his craving for chocolate was gone.
Decisions made, he was just about to pick it up and bin it when he heard her voice again. “I lied,” she announced, and his head turned to face her. She was leaning on the doorway staring at him.
“Bout what.” he asked
“Tommy.” she said, smiling when his face showed more interest. “I think you have a way cuter butt.”
He felt himself grin before recognizing a slight brush rise on his cheeks. He looked down a little trying to hide his face, but she must have sensed it, because the next time he looked at her, she was sending a flirtatious smile his way, and then – as soon as the moment had occurred, she was gone.
Again Justin bent down, still smiling and deep in thought. He loved the fact that Rebecca was around, he loved the fact he had a sister, and he loved the fact she loved him. She was the reason he’d stayed sober – in all senses of the word, the reason he’d grown up so much. Just her existence meant someone to protect, like he’d always wanted. Because being a brother wasn’t better than being a superhero at all, it was exactly like it, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Okay second post!!!

Spoilers for 2.04, "States of Union"...
Walker Women Road Trip! Sarah, Kitty, and Nora head to Ojai in order to have a relaxing weekend (spas, massages--you get the picture). The weekend marks what would have been Sarah and Joe's 10-year wedding anniversary. Nora seems to have organized the vacation primarily for Sarah's benefit, who is still grieving her marriage and unsure of her place in life. Nora is trying to paint an optimistic picture of being single, but Sarah isn't having it. The women end up crashing a wedding reception (Kitty think it's a great way to meet guys), and Sarah does end up hitting it off with one of the guests. Problem is, when they get back to the hotel, in a moment of (drunken) weakness Sarah confesses that her ex has gone back to his ex-wife, she's off mommy-duty, she should have no problem doing this and yet she can't...and then she excuses herself from the situation, mortified. (Note: She and Joe are still only separated.)
Tommy is distracted at work, owing to Julia's departure last episode. When Holly solicits his support in dealing with a retailer, he's dismissive, which irks Holly. Later, Tommy tells her never to use his father against him like that again. (Speculation: My guess is she's all, "This business was William's idea, and you're letting him down...")
While in the sauna together, Sarah lets loose the news of Julia's departure, much to Nora's surprise. Her first instinct is to rush off the vineyard (since it's nearby), but the girls stop her, citing Tommy's privacy. Later, we see Nora leave the wedding party and get into her car, "on a mission." (Nora is not one to be dissuaded, lol)
Kevin and Saul get into some sort of fight. Unclear as to the subject matter. Saul tells him that they should be careful to treat each other with more respect, but Kevin responds he will when Saul earns some. Kevin walks away, and Saul is left shaken.
Kitty thinks Robert is experiencing doubts about their relationship (again, unclear exactly why), which leads Nora to give a big speech saying that sometimes one of the people in a marriage has to have enough trust for both people. And this will shift every now and then, as happens in all marriages.

Justin is seen commiserating with another vet and then in physical therapy re: his injured knee. Later, he and Rebecca seem to get into some sort of argument (alas, we don't have the context here either), leaving Rebecca near tears.
AND...
Apparantly a funny part is when his physical therapist tells him not to worry, that his *girlfriend* will still like him. And Justin replies, "Dude, that's my sister." Lol! Gotta love Justin...
SIDENOTE: If this is correct isn't this the second time the writers have made fun of the fact that people believe Rebecca and Justin are together. The first being in "Three Parties," when that John dude says to Justin, "sweet ride."
Are they trying to hint something???
